Walks Prove Costly as A's Lose
VICTORIA, May 4 — Southpaw Bill Woop got into trouble with walks Monday night as the Wenatchee Chiefs came from behind to defeat the Victoria Athletics 8-5 in a Western International League game.
Bill White's home run with two aboard in the fourth had given Victoria a 4-2 lead. But Wenatchee scored once in the fifth and then three times in the sixth. Woop walked Eddie Barr, Bob Williams and Haskell to open the inning, struck out a batter and got a force-out at the plate. But Jim Warner took a full-count pitch past second baseman Mike Hafenecker, who broke the wrong way, and all three runs scored on the single.
Williams and Haskell hit singles in the seventh which scored the final two Wenatchee runs.
Bill Condon went the distance for the Chiefs. The underhanded pitcher left 11 stranded, allowing nine hits and walking six.
