Woop in Hero Role as A's Nudge Caps
VICTORIA — Lefthander Bill Woop shut down a Vancouver Capilanos rally then went on to bring in the winning run as the Victoria Athletics pulled off an 11-10 win in Western International League action before 1,500 fans Tuesday night at Royal Athletic Park.
The Caps scored in the seventh to knot the game at 10-10, but Woop relieved Joe Blankenship with the winning run at second base, and struck out Lee Mohr and Len Tran to end the inning.
Adding the final touch, he came to bat with two out in the eighth and Mike Hafenecker at third base and lined to double to centre field.
Woop picked up his fourth win of the year and struck out seven in 2 2-3 innings.
The A's had quickly taken a 7-0 lead in the first. They bashed Jack Meister for three solid hits and a couple of walked and Hunk Anderson was rushed in before a man was out. He eventually got the side out, but not after giving up a bases-loaded double to Johnny Cavalli and Bill White's two-run single.
Anderson walked two runs over in the second and Pat Patterson reached him for a homer in the third.
